Yoga Nidra for Sleep: A Practice Guide
Yoga Nidra, often translated as yogic sleep, is a guided meditative practice that takes the practitioner to the threshold between waking and sleep. It is one of the most effective tools in the yoga tradition for accessing deep rest.
How to practise
Lie down in Savasana and follow a guided rotation of awareness through the body, combined with visualisation and the holding of a sankalpa, a short, positive resolve. Begin with 20 to 30 minutes, ideally at the same time each day.
Keep the room cool and dim, and cover yourself with a light shawl; the body cools as it relaxes. If you fall asleep, that is fine. Over time you will learn to stay at the edge of sleep, aware and deeply rested.
Rest as a practice
At Maatre, the day is built to make rest possible: free time after breakfast and after lunch, and an evening that winds down with journaling and release before lights out at 10 p.m. Practices like Yoga Nidra land differently when the whole day is already moving at a slower pace.
